Tanya Steinhausen

I have been making art for most of my life. I do a variety of art such as painting, drawing, weaving, needlepoint, mixed media and sculpture. My favorite technique is using paint as a background and drawing on top of it. I use brightly coloured markers because they show up really well on surfaces. The paint acts as a base colour for the marker I add on top. The marker on top has a unique effect on the background. I started experimenting using different materials together years ago.

My themes in art are based on what I am interested in. When something sparks my interest I do research at the library or use my imagination.

I am inspired by a lot of things like nature, travel, myths, other cultures and heritage.

One of my favorite artists is Emily Carr because she is a local artist. I’ve been to her house in James Bay a number of times. My other favorite artist is Frida Kahlo because although she spent most of her time in a wheelchair, she made wonderful art.

Making art is fun and I get to express myself through creativity which is what art is really all about.
